The Power of Community

This week our local town reminded me of something that technology can never replace. Community.

Moville Festival has just come to an end, and what a week it was.

A new committee brought together local businesses, volunteers, artists, families, health and wellbeing groups and community organisations with one shared ambition: to create something that everyone could enjoy, people of all ages.

And they did (with the weather as our friend).

There were packed events, fantastic music, laughter in the streets, a real sense of optimism and that people wanted to be together.

For me, it wasn't just about the scale of what they achieved.

It was how they achieved it. They went back to basics.

The bed push returned. Street frolics were back.

Games that many of us remember from years gone by suddenly felt fresh again and new to the younger people.

Alongside them came brilliant social media, new events, clever teasers, surprise guests and a new energy that captured everyone's imagination and attention - which these days is no mean feat.

Speaking to committee members, it wasn't about choosing between nostalgia and innovation. They intentionally wanted to bring back the old with a modern twist.

It was about bringing the two together.

That got me thinking about inCharge.

People often describe us as a technology company.

We are (even though I still feel awkward saying that).

And I have said this many times, technology has never been our starting point.  People and community has.

Long before there was an app, there were families supporting one another, carers building trusted relationships, neighbours helping neighbours and professionals working alongside people to create better lives.

That's where our story began.

Our platform simply gives those micro-communities another way to stay connected.

Our co-design approach comes from exactly the same place. Every member of the inCharge team has roots in community development. We've spent years working alongside people in our respective areas of interest, not designing solutions from a distance.

Listening before building. Learning before leading. Creating with people rather than for them.

When people ask how we've approached product development, I often describe it as co-design because that's an easy explanation.

Maybe a better way to say it is this.

It's community development, expressed through technology.

Every feature we've built has been shaped by families, disabled people, personal assistants, professionals, partners and organisations willing to share their experiences with us.

Some have been with us since the very beginning. Others have joined more recently. We actively invite this all the time.

Together they've challenged our thinking, celebrated our progress, tested early ideas, spotted things we'd missed and reminded us why this work matters. They pick us up when we are feeling down, they challenge us to move faster, motivating us by their belief.

That's community.

It doesn't always move quickly. It isn't always easy. It has disagreements, setbacks and periods when the path forward isn't obvious.

In my mind, when people believe in a shared purpose, the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts. I believe that's pretty special.

Watching Moville Festival this week reminded me that communities have always found ways to adapt.

They face difficult times.

They weather change.

They welcome new people.

They rediscover old traditions.

And they keep moving forward.

Communities aren't built on events or technology. They're built on people.

Technology can help. Events can inspire.

Technology doesn't create community. It strengthens the communities that already exist.

But it's people who create belonging.

As inCharge continues to grow, I hope we never lose sight of that.

We'll keep building the technology.

We'll keep listening.

We'll keep innovating.

But above all, we'll keep investing in the community that has shaped us from the very beginning.

In uncertain times, and long after the latest feature is released or the next milestone is celebrated, I believe one thing will still be true.

Communities build lasting change.

We're privileged to be part of one.
